The 2nd Joint Annual Conference on Youth, Sports and Culture Took Place at Robe, Bale

The 2nd annual joint conference on youth, sports and culture organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture   and regional bureaus, was held from 29 to 31 August, 2005, in Robe, Bale Zone, Oromia National Regional states. Ministers, several heads of bureaus and departments of all regions except Somale attended the meeting.

Participants evaluated the implementation of the 1997's plan and examined and adopted the 1998's draft plan. The session also entertained presentations of papers on Business Process Re-engineering, Information Management system, Youth Development Strategic Plan and Gender Mainstreaming Guidelines. These papers were presented and discussed with the objectives of exchange of experience among regional bureaus and federal ministry.

Participants after the meeting visited historical sites and natural wonders of Bale such as Dire Sheik Hussein Mosque, Sofomar Cave, Dinsho National Park and Sanaate mountain peak. The joint conference and the site visits were hosted by the youth, culture and sports sector of the Oromia National Regional State. 

         Ethio-Tourism Sport and Music

Festival takes place

Ethiopian Bicycle Federation, in collaboration with Ethiopian Tourism Commission, Abyssinia Express, Shewa Advertising Agency and Nuk Informatics, organized Ethio-Tourism Sports and Music Festival that was held from 25 to 27 Sept, 2005. Italian delegate of 25 members, that includes sport officials, took part in the event.

Cyclists of 8 clubs from the seven Regional States including those from the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa City Administrations and a large number of amateurs participated in different categories. Besides, a number of sport tournaments like cultural sports, paralympics, athletics, and circus show took place. Cultural music and fashion show were also part of the program.

The sport officials from Italy that came along with the delegate met His Excellency Ambassador Teshome Toga Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture and other personalities from Ethiopian Tourism Commission, Italian Embassy and different sport federations. The officials discussed on the possibilities of offering continued assistances to Ethiopian Sport Federations, maintaining Menlik the 2nd Hospital and inviting a sport delegate of Ethiopia to Italy through further communication. They also expressed their interest to engage in investment activities in Ethiopia.

SPORTS:

A National Sports Institute to be constructed

-The Ethiopian government is due to construct a National Sports Institute that is planed to begin late 2005. The construction of the Institute will be finalized in three years time.

Other endeavors of the Government and International sports organizations (IOC and FIFA and) and include, among others, the Olympic Village, in Addis Ababa, the Meridian Football Project and the Sandafa Athletics Village in Oromia Regional State.

Youth

Youth Sector Strategy (YSS) and Youth Sector Development Program (YSDP) documents under preparation

-The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture is preparing the YSS and YDP documents in order to implement the basic issues of the National Youth Policy of Ethiopia. The YSS is a 10-year strategy document being prepared for the years 2006-2016, while the YSDP is the first and a 5-year sector development program. A task force, comprising members from the various GO and NGO stakeholders and partners, is preparing these two documents.

CULTURE:

Conservation of Axum obelisk, the Semien National Park, and, the Candidature of the Walled City of Harar (Jagol) at the center point of UNESCO.


 
The 29th Session of World Heritage Committee is to take place in Durban, South Africa, from 10-17 July 2005 organized by UNESCO World Heritage Center. Among the issues to be discussed and decided upon are: the enlisting, into the UNESCO World Heritage List, of the fifteenth century walled city of Harar(Jagol). The Session will also decide on the endangered natural heritage of the Semien mountains national park of Ethiopia.


Agreement on Language Development Signed

              A General Agreement on Language Development was signed between the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Benshangul-Gumuz National Regional State and Summer Institute of Language Ethiopia (SIL-Ethiopia) on 14th October 2004. The agreement was signed by H.E Mohammoda Ahmed Gaas, Vice Minister of  the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture,  Mr. Worku Baro, Head of the Bureau of Benshagul-Gumuz National Regional  State and Mr. Simon Caldwell, director of SIL Ethiopia.

               It is learnt that the agreement will bring together SIL’S Linguistic expertise and the government’s priorities to serve the many language communities of Ethiopia. Its objective is to further the goals of Nationality Language research and sustainable language development.

                     A Football Academy Establishes

          
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and African Football Association (CAF) Singed an agreement to establish Central and East African Football Academy in which talented youth, who will be recruited from the Central and East African Countries, will be trained.

           The Academy will be established on an area of 50,000 sq.m. in Addis Ababa- Ethiopia.

A Memorandum of Understanding Signed

The Memorandum of collaboration between the National Museum of Ethiopia and the British Museum was signed by H.E Ato Mohammoda Ahmed Goas, vice Minister of the Ministry of Youth,  Sports and Culture; Mrs Mamitu Yilma,Director of the  National Museum of Ethiopia and Prof.John Mack, Head of African Programmes of the British Museum, here in Addis Ababa on 24Feb,2005.
The accord foresees exchange of personnel in both directions, so that training and technical assistance offered to staff in Ethiopian can be augmented by assistance in highlighting the presentation of Ethiopian culture in the UK.
